Our Capabilities

Bridge Rehabilitation and Redecking

CEC has been working on bridges for nearly 50 years. We’ve learned a lot. We know that it takes extensive and careful planning to rehabilitate or retrofit a structure in operation, and that usually we can do it safely, without closing the bridge or causing major interruptions to traffic flows. Our workers are the best in the area and ensure that the work is done right and have the tools and support they need. Every construction job is different. We look at each one as an opportunity to perform better, faster, and safer. We’re informed by our experience, but not constrained by it. We love a challenge. It’s what we are best at.

Marine Construction

For the past two decades CEC has been building our Marine team and fleet. We now have one of the most capable and productive Marine operations in Northern California and partnerships established to support us. Our work experience on bridges, wharfs, piers and docks, in the Bay or navigable rivers, extends from Marysville to Stockton to all over the San Francisco Bay. Whether it’s holding position to a fraction of a foot with anchors or spudding barges into a fast moving river, we can create the work platforms and use cranes or other tools to get the work done.

Bridge Painting

The best constructors are masters of all trades. CEC added expertise in complex industrial painting over twenty years ago during the historic earthquake retrofit of the Bay Bridge’s West Span into downtown San Francisco. During complex retrofit projects, multiple skill sets come into play in rapid succession; for access, containment, removal of obsolete components, cleaning and preparation, then installation of new components, finishing and moving on to the next connection. Integrating all aspects under the control of a knowledgeable general contractor is key. Since that project, we have maintained qualification to self-perform, or oversee, complex painting projects and hazardous coatings (most often lead) removal.

Structure Demolition

Sometimes the old has to make way for the new. CEC has tackled some of the most demanding demolition projects around: successfully, safely, swiftly. Engineering is part of our name and one of the “secrets” to our success. As much as blowing things up is impressive (and fun), ensuring the integrity and stability of an ever-changing, complex structure is more important. Our technical expertise allows us to use innovative and unique methods to remove obsolete structures without damage to adjacent people or property and to adhere with all required regulations.

CMGC Projects

In the most successful projects, all parties bring their best skills to the table and the sum is greater than the parts. Owners are not constructors. CEC can bring big benefits to big projects. Advances and innovations in constructability and sequencing are our specialty and work best when we are involved in the project from the outset. Our approach is always one of partnering, after all it’s usually our tax dollars too. And we want the best value and best product since we are daily users of the infrastructure we help build.

Transit and Rail Work

About the only type of work that CEC has a longer track record on than roads and bridges is transit. From light rail in San Jose to LA Metro construction to BART expansion and more recently earthquake retrofit and upgrades, CEC has continued to work closely with transit agencies to pioneer needed maintenance and improvements with minimal impact on the traveling public, and never failed to open the lines on schedule for the morning commute.

Dam Rehabilitation

Flood control and water storage dams are critical parts of our nation’s infrastructure, and often provide clean power as well. Maintaining and upgrading dam structures is important but challenging work. Just what CEC excels at. Sites are often remote; work schedules are compressed by season and rainfall, and failures can be catastrophic. CEC’s careful planning and innovative construction approaches make this a particularly successful area for our skill set. We know the importance of superior access for workers, understand how to install temporary supports that are subjected to high loading, and carefully plan for all contingencies.
